Beyond the Basics Inverse black & white image

Hi, I need to convert the attached file so that the black sections remain black, with the white sections being transparent on one layer. I then need on a separate layer for the white sections (collar of dress, lines etc) to be included on their own as black. It is for a cookie stamp that is going to be laser engraved and each section )base of dress, collars etc) needs to be engraved to a different depth to create a 'pop out' effect. I have tried many things including importing the image as a PNG and tracing and inverting, however when I get rid of the black background from the inversion, the whole image becomes transparent. I have also tried using filters however cannot achieve the desired effect. Appreciate any advice.

[Path > Break Apart] will create separate shapes for the black and white areas, then you can tackle each subshape differently. Maybe you'll want to join some of them again with [Path > Combine]. I'm not familiar with engaving so maybe this is too simplistic.

@TylerDurden, could you please advise what video capture program you are using in your reply, that shows the replay on repeat? It is great! (BTW sorry could not work out how to tag you for some reason!)

On windows, I use ShareX (FOSS) https://getsharex.com/. I also use https://github.com/Phaiax/Key-n-Stroke to show mouse and keys.

On Linux I use Peek for recordings. https://github.com/phw/peek with https://www.thregr.org/wavexx/software/screenkey/
