I often find myself working on program-generated scientific figures containing many objects which require alignment adjustments.
In such circumstances, I select the objects to be aligned and head to the "Align and Distribute" panel.
The problem I face is the following : - I often cannot determine at a glance which of the objects selected is the biggest or smallest, or (less commonly) I cannot remember which element came in first or last in my selection.
My question is thus, does there exist a way to highlight the object relative to which the alignment is selected to take place?
The following sketch depicts what an example of what I am looking for, with the reference object for alignment - here the first selected object - being highlighted by a thicker selection contour, with a mockup of the toggle for this option below the 'relative to' dropdown.
Thank you for all the work you pour into making Inkscape an amazing program.
You are welcome to make a request on the bug tracker.
In the meantime, I suggest selecting all the included objects, then use shift-click to de-select the desired reference object, then shift-click to re-select that object, then align to Last Selected. No need to remember anything.
