I use the caligraphic tool in brush stroke mode to create an object with a variable outline which has the desired effect. I didn't want to use a single stroke to create the line as this could only produce a standard line width.
However, I need to create a fill which I would normally do by creating a copy of the object and placing it behind the first item to provide the fill.
Is there any quick way to turn an item drawn with brush strokes into a "fillable" object with identical border size - ie remove the inner strokes of the brush line?
I have found the answer - select the path and use Path>Break Apart and this creates two objects one with the outline of the outer path and one with the inner both of which have a fill propery.

I'd try the fill bucket tool. Check out its properties for closing gaps and "overfilling" a region. Precision increases with zoom level.
