Hi everyone. I'm having some issues with the 1.4 release candidate. I'm wondering if anyone else has come across these behaviors and what I should make of them.
I'm on Windows 11. With the select tool, I cannot click and drag over locked objects. I can do this in 1.3.2 but not 1.4rc1. I often draw a concept traditionally and then trace over it in Inkscape. I lock the image so it doesn't move. Sometimes I need to select multiple items on the image, but now I have to zoom out and click and drag from off the image or hide the image to click and drag. This isn't the worst issue, but it's annoying.
As for the nodes tool, I've looked through the release notes, but I couldn't find anything so not sure if this is a new to 1.4 feature to allow a different way to select multiple objects, but when I'm using the node tool and try to select a new object, I will often end up with multiple objects selected when I don't want this to happen. I've found that if I double click (even if it's a rather slow double click) directly on or nearby a second object, I can get this to happen consistently. Sometimes, when I'm working, I'll end up with multiple objects selected. Sometimes, just single clicking another object will select it and I have to click several times on an empty part of the canvas to deselect. If this is a new feature, is there a way to disable it? I've found nothing related to this in preferences. If this is a bug, is it a known issue? If it's not a bug, I would like to be able to disable it as it messes with my work flow.
Already had that checked. Tried unchecking and then rechecking and still doesn't work. I tried resetting my preferences. That also didn't work. Seems like it's also doing it in 1.3.2 now, which it wasn't before and is still working properly on my other PC that just has 1.3.2 installed. Weird thing is is that it will work in 1.4rc1 for a few seconds when I first open a file with a locked object or place an image into a new file and then lock it and then it stops working. So, I'm probably going to uninstall both and just install 1.4 instead of the parallel install I have alongside 1.3.2 right now to see if that helps. Hopefully it also fixes the issue with the nodes tool
Same situation for me, I can't reproduce the problem on Inkscape 1.4-rc1 (61ec3f2, 2024-09-26).
I didn't pay attention until today, but double clicking with node tool on different paths make them selected in addition to the first selected, for me.
I never paid attention to that either. Same behavior in 1.3.2? If not, I really need to pay attention to that behavior in 1.4. Not sure if that is good or bad in the way I use Inkscape. If I wanted paths combined - I would simply combine them then node edit them. I can see having a slightly bad mouse would drive me insane if that is the actual behavior.
Just tried it in 1.4. Never paid attention to that before. I also selected mutiple paths and was able to edit them at the same time. It doesn't combine them however as I assumed. This might be useful behavior.
If this existed in 1.3.2, I swear I didn't know it was possible.
I installed 1.4rc on a work computer running windows 10 and am not having the same issue. So I'm not sure what the issue is with my windows 11 laptop. I was hoping a fresh install would help. Even deleted all (that I could find) of the left behind folders before reinstalling and still having this issue with the selector tool over locked objects for my windows 11 laptop.

I hope so as I `m finding it essential to manipulate different paths with different styles at the same time.
Aoi_nezumi - Before nuking Inkscape, try resetting your preferences first. Something I only realized until recently is if you reinstall the software and if you bypass the setup, Inkscape will use your previous preferences and simply update them on the first use. I am guessing Inkscape does not actually validate an existing preference during a reinstall.
I been uninstalling/reinstalling 1.22, 1.3.2 and the three 1.4betas the past month or two. And there is a certain preference that is only available in 1.4 that I set. When I reinstalled 1.4rc - that preference is still set.
What I am getting at is that simply uninstalling and reinstalling (and even deleting the entire Inkscape directory) may not fix your problem.
Be nice to get a developer to verify this. Might explain a few issues users have.
"Even deleted all (that I could find) of the left behind folders before reinstalling and still having this issue with the selector tool over locked objects for my windows 11 laptop."
So what you are saying is that you deleted everything in the Program>Inkscape folder?
What about this folder?
C:..............\AppData\Roaming\inkscape
If you delete everything there - it would be like a "factory reset". Shooting in the dark with a wild guess as usual ...
If that doesn't work - no clue what else to tell you ...
I'm referring to the AppData/Roaming/Inkscape folder. Program folder is deleted automatically on uninstall. Your suggestion about resetting the preferences first is good because Inkscape doesn't delete them on an uninstall and fresh installs, even in a parallel install that's specified for running two versions on the same machine, will use those same preferences.
First thing I did when I ran into this problem was to reset the preferences and tried just that before uninstalling. When that didn't work, that's when I uninstalled via add/remove programs and then deleted the Inkscape folder in Roaming. Made sure to restart computer before the fresh install. Unfortunately didn't work. This is only an issue on one specific computer, though. I've since been able to try 1.4rc on a couple others and they don't have this issue. I have no idea what's causing it. It's very strange, but I'm glad it's not a serious issue. Very easily worked around.
I'm following your steps.Learning quite a bit the last few days. lol
So if a user has an issue the following steps should be performed????
1) reset preferences. See if that solved the problem.
2) uninstall/reinstall. Again check.
3) Uninstall. Delete the folder where the Inkscape roaming Appdata is. You will loose user created symbols, templates, all user installed extensions, key shortcuts, everything. Best to copy that somewhere. Reinstall. From your explanation, this step is unnecessary.
4) if that doesn't solve it, you got a windows problem or an Inkscape bug and should report it
I had that issue when I bought a new notebook 2 years ago. Had Windows 11 installed. Previous had Windows 7 on it. I had no clue Microsoft created Fast Startup.
I'm pretty sure it's okay to leave fast startup on and just do a reboot when needed. Fast startup doesn't affect Restart, so initiating one will get you a full shut down before it restarts.

Maybe this will help.
[shift+ctrl+p] opens Inkscape preferences.
[Behaviour > Selecting]
[Ignore locked objects and layers: Yes]

Update: It it did not help with either issue.
Sorry, I can't reproduce the problem. 1.3.2 and 1.4rc1 on MacOS.

Oh - I forgot the most important step if you are using WIndows 10, 11.

I'll call that step Zero. lol
