Beginners' Questions borders with offset

I’m trying to make a layered design to laser out. And I want the border to be the same size on each layer but stepped in about 3mm each layer from the inside so it makes a nice reveal on the border. I used the inside offset then just adjusted the outside nodes to the previous layers nodes. Is there an easier way to do this with just moving the inner line 3mm instead of doing inset then adjusting the nodes?

I'm not sure what you want to achieve. Can upload an image? (Using the paperclip icon below left.)

Perhaps this will work for you.Β

    Select your outer shape.
Create a clone with [Edit > Clone > Create Clone] or [alt+d].
Open the path effects dialog with [Path> Path Effects...] or [shft+ctrl+7].
In the dropdown box select [Offset] then [Unit: mm] and [Offset: -3.000]

When you edit the outer shape, the clone+offset shape will update automatically.

in the image you can see i have two layers. When i duplicated the border onto the second layer i used the inset tool to make it smalle so there is a reveal along the inside then had to edit the nodes on the outside to match up the perimeter of the border so that the shape stays the same size. Im wondering if there is an easier more accurate way of moving just the inside without having to move nodes after to match up the outside.

Your screenshot doesn't reveal the structure of your drawing, but here's one method to consider.
