Hi, I came across a photoshop tutorial for how to manipulate an image so that it looks straight on a conical mug so I understand the principle of creating a template using the height of the mug and diameters of the top and bottom. I'm attempting it with 'object to path' but struggling and think this is probably not the best solution Help?

I'm not sure if I'm understanding, but the Perspective tool might do what you want (it's on the Extensions menu under Modify Path).

Start at the bottom left, and using the Bezier tool, draw a path clockwise in the shape you need (you can fine tune with the node tool afterwards).

Now select this path, and the object you wish to place inside it, then run the extension.

IMPORTANT NOTE.... when you say 'manipulate an image', are we dealing with a vector object or a raster image here (a .jpg or .png)? Inkscape can only manipulate vector objects, not photographs. You can import a photo of a mug to use as a base to trace the path, but whatever you want to put inside this path MUST be a vector path. If you want to put another photo inside the path, it won't work. If you need to manipulate a photo, try Gimp. It's also free and is more akin to Photoshop than Inkscape is. Gimp has multiple transform tools that will allow you to stretch images into whatever shape you need.

This is really comprehensive and helpful. Thank you for taking the time. I need to manipulate both vector images and photographs. I'll take your advice and see how I get on with Gimp. Thanks again.
