Beginners' Questions Making image area transparent

I would like the very inner area of the Red square in this image to be transparent.

How do I make it so?

Either ungroup all or ctrl click to select the inner portions one by one to delete:

But be aware of hidden black shapes in the background - no idea where they come from or needed - but they can be deleted without changing the look.

Thanks for the try, Polygon.  This is the first brush with Inkscape I have had so I know absolutely nothing.

First thing is that I have no idea what you are doing in that little video you sent.  There does not seem to be any logic to the areas you appear to select.

Secondly there is a problem with identifying transparent areas.  In your video these are identifiable by their chequerboard appearance.  I cannot get that appearance.  I think it might be there but is not clearly discernible.  Could this be because I have a 4K VDU and the resolution it too high?  If so, how do I fix that?

Actually, all I could achieve is that internal square, including the corner of the Blue Square, goes yellow - not quite what I was expecting.  What is that yellow colour all about?

Can you be a little more explicit please?

[File > Document Properties] opens a dialog box.  Under the Page tab there's an option to use [Checkerboard background].

If you don't understand Polygon's video, it might be useful to go through some Inkscape tutorials.  I suggest starting with [Help > Tutorials > Inkscape: Basic].

    Thanks Paddy_CAD

The only reason I am using Inkscape is that I have to edit a dozen or so SVG files.  In all probability I shall never use the app again.  Forgive me for being lazy, but the prospect of learning yet another software package just to do one simple job seemed a little like overkill.  Consequently I was seeking a helping hand and a 'quick and dirty' way of getting the job done. 😉

Anyway, somehow I hacked the job and I now have transparency where I wanted it.

    Thanks folks.  Stay well.
