Beginners' Questions Is there any way to tell if I'm inside a group?

Another beginner's question. It happened quite a few times now that I didn't notice I was inside a group and ended up with objects inside it that I didn't want to have in there. Is there any indicator if I'm inside a group or not atm?

Yes, in the status bar is a dropdown menu to navigate the hierarchy.  The Objects dialog will show the entire document tree (like layers dialog, but shows objects).

Also handy is Menu>Object>Pop selected objects out of group, and Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Alt_V (cut and paste in place).

Ah, that also shows on which layer an object is, good to know, thanks!

So I was just wondering about this again only to see I've already asked this three years ago.

I still find it confusing to tell if I'm in a group or not (especially with clip groups this can get annoying).

I think it would be really cool to have a visual indication of this. Illustrator does this by greying out everything around it, which is not ideal. I know the bar a the botton says I'm in group #121245 atm but I never look at that and it doesn't work in node view. If Layers and Obects would always jump to the selected object this could maybe work, cause then you could see at a glance if you're in a group or not …

I think Illustrator activates a frame around the canvas view that shows the hierarchy (Layername > Groupname > Objectname), which I think is pretty cool. But I guess Inkscape doesn't have something similar?
