For some reason this is how InkScape looks like when I try to make a rectangle.
Could someone please help?

I'd try with no stroke and a dark fill.
I also note that the object is in the "root" not a layer... that's not conventional.

My laptop is acting weird and its possible that there was something that happened while InkScape was opened....
