Beginners' Questions Help with a design how can I draw this pattern

    Hello,

I am trying to create the attached image Ending_design. I have been able to create it but with allot of steps. I am wondering if someone out there knows a function in Inkscape that can make this a little easier.

The starting shape is easy to create with symmetry. I want to put lines in-between both shapes easy with even symmetry between the lines.

The ending design I was able to do but it took allot of steps to get there. I drew a bezier line, then I had to do a Path->Stroke to path then Path->Combine for later operations, then moved the rotation to the base center point of the two eclipse objects, then used the rotate transform to rotate copies 5degrees until I got the amount I wanted. I then did a Path->Union to make it one object. I duplicated this and mirrored it for the other side.

After that was complete, I duplicated the middle ellipse, did a Path->Breakapart then Path->Combine to make a cutting object. Then selected the new middle object and one of the two side lines and did a Path->Division and had to manually clean up the line bits. Repeated for the other side.

Then in to finish the outer lines, I duplicated the outer eclipse, selected that eclipse and one side of all the lines, did a Path->Difference operation. This then removed the lines outside of the outer ellipse. Repeat for the other side.

So I got to the end goal but I am wondering if there is a better way to solve this problem. I have tried the path effect of stick sub paths but that didn't seem to get me lines that are rotated at an angle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Some designs do take several steps to reach your goal  In Inkscape there are usually different ways to get to your goal. See the link below for one way. Note that you could easily use a stroked line instead of a filled shape. After creating your "burst", you could trim down or cut  (Path  Operations) your shape, or use clipping if you wish.

(Another way to create the burst is by using Path Effects and then Mirror Copies.)

Others will probably come along and offer other ways.

Thank you Ken! The link was very helpful. That gave me a few ideas on how to apply this to my design.

I know you were not after making "sun rays". I offered that link to see and learn some principles.

See the attached graphic which shows yet another way.

    All the best to you.

For this particular case, Inkscape has a built-in solution.

    [Path > Path Effects]  [+]  [Stitch Sub-Paths]

When you're happy with the design [Path > Object to Path] converts calculated coordinates from the live path effect to absolute coordinates so you can delete or adjust any of the paths.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will give this a try.
