Beginners' Questions Fonts do not appear in Inkscape. I have tried everything

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  I just recently upgraded my computer to windows 10 version 1809.  Since installing inkscape .92.4 I am unable to see my fonts that I have installed.  They worked fine on my last computer but not this one.  I have tried restarting inkscape.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the fonts.  I am the admin and have admin rights.  I read somewhere to right click on font and change to "install for all users" but I do not have that option.  I even tried creating another user but that didn't work.  I'm completely lost.   Please help.

I came here looking for a solution to the same problem. I tried "install for all users" and it worked. I didn't try that before because I'm the only user on my computer. I didn't have this problem before the latest 10 update but also didn't have the "all users" option before. So maybe your missing an update or part of one? Hope this helps.

    😀

I found this old post on previous Inkscape forum :

    http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Installing_fonts

In don't know if copying fonts in this Inkscape directory will work for windows 10, but there's no loss giving a try.

Instead of double-clicking on the font file, to install it, right-click on it.  There, you should see "Install for all users".

Yes, this is a known problem with Windows 10, not with Inkscape.  But 'install for all users' seems to work.

rockinaleather.  I'm not on win 10, but from seeing many, many, other posts with the same issue, it's there; you may have to go back to the extract files folder and reinstall again - right click at the folder where it's zipped, in order to pull up the install for all users option.

  7. #7
    brynn brynn @brynn

rockinaleather, are you using Windows 10?

Instead of double-clicking on the font file (TTF or OTF or whatever), right-click on it.  From what I've been told, you should see install for all users by right-clicking.

If you're using some other operating system, you have a different problem, and we would need more info.

    brynn brynn @brynn

We'll have to call in the developer who tells us this is how to fix it.  We don't have many Windows 10 users (among those who answer the questions).

@rockinaleather Most of the time when the option to "Install for all users" appears to be missing this is because:

    • you're right clicking the font in a Windows system folder called "Fonts"
    • you're right clicking the font file while it is still inside a compressed folder

In both cases you *won't* get the proper context menu. Instead copy/extract the font file into an empty folder on your hard drive, then try again from there.

Windows 10 does have an issue with some files including its own, Outlook 365 is a good example - it needs express permission to access local OST file via signiture to work, probably meny other examples too such as above.

There are instances in Win10 where the font appears in the Windows font  directory, but they will not appear in Inkscape. There is no indication that the listed font is actually a shortcut, but it is. The true directory of the font can be found by getting the properties panel using a right-click menu. The directory is likely in ..Users/username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Fonts/  It is sometimes possible to copy the font to the C:/Windows/Fonts folder using Windows Explorer or the Command Line.

Windows10 users getting fonts from the appStore have similar issues:

    Have a nice day.

I know this question was asked awhile ago but it may help someone who finds themselves reading this thread later on. I felt the same way as the OP. I felt there was no "install for all users" until someone pointed me in the right direction and here is what you do.....

Go to your start or search bar on your computer and type in the following....
%localappdata% (must type the whole thing out {for some users} for the folder to appear and not do a web search)

click on that folder so it will open and then click on the following drop down menu folders...

    • Microsoft
    • Windows
    • Font

Once in the Fonts folder you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. locate the font you want installed into Inkscape (or any other program it is not showing up for) from that point RIGHT CLICK and then you will see "Install for all users" and it will install it HOWEVER in order for it to show in in Inkscape you MUST close out of all Inkscape windows and open it back up again for it to appear! 2. you can just click the top box for it to select all the fonts (if you forgot the name or if you downloaded a lot) and then once all selected, pick a font and right click and then install for all users and it will install them, if you already have that font installed it will ask you if you want to replace or or skip it and just choose whatever you want, it wont matter.

The worst thing is that I have not found a way for it to automatically install any new fonts into Inkscape without having to go through this whole process EVERY SINGLE TIME I download a new font! 😢😡 I would hope soon that it can be fixed because in the past I never had this issue and it is very frustrating to say the least! If someone out there knows a secret on how to have it automatically install for all users without having having to do all these steps after you install/download a new font to your computer, please please PLEASE PAAAALEEEESE share your magic wisdom with us all!!!

    Applestump Applestump @Applestump

If you don't see 'install for all users' when right clicking on file, chances are its in place where you don't have admin privileges - try moving to desktop or your own documents folder and trying from there. If using someone else's computer, or a PC that was pre-built you may not have admin rights anywhere - if this occurs you need to assign rights through the manage accounts area.

    Cheers

I am a Windows 10 user, and can confirm the font issue is fixed in Inkscape 0.92.4 (e23c7ed, 2020-01-28), named 0.92.x on the official Inkscape download page.

Explained in more detail by Inkscape developer Patrick Storz in this forum thread.

    Aero

I have 0.92.4 and went to the thread that you provided through that link and I tried to download whatever version it was in the ink you provided there (0.92.x) and I get an Error/redirect msg:

    C:\users\....\downloads\inkscape-0.92.4_2020-02-28_8da6682-x86 (2).7z

This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default apps settings page.

what do I do about this?

and by doing this it will allow me to download fonts and they will show up in my inkscape without me having to close out of all the windows and going to my font folders and clicking "install for all users" each time!?!?!?!?

Yes, I have both versions installed. My fonts do show up in 0.92.x, but not in the old 0.92.4 (2019-01-14) version.

ok well can you tell me how to UNINSTALL the 7-zip?!?! I did nothing for me in fact after I looked in Inkscape after I downloaded a font, I had to go to my font folder and tried to right click to install for all users and that option wasnt even there, i had to unclick and right click AGAIN for that option to show up and even then it still didnt show up in inkscape, I had to close out of all the inkscape windows and restart the program all over again in order for the new font to show up. So i am not sure how that was suppose to work but can ou tell me how to uninstall it please?

I had to close out of all the inkscape windows and restart the program all over again in order for the new font to show up.

This is the usual case, for the few years I have used Inkscape.

That is what I have always had to do Tyler Durden, that is why i was trying to be so specific on what did that other file do. and that file didnt help me out at all! so i want to uninstall it but idk how. do you?

  23. #23
    Aero Aero @Aero◻️

So you want to uninstall 7-Zip, necessary for unzipping the 0.92.x download file?

No problem, just right click the 7-Zip File Manager icon found in your start menu and select Uninstall from the context menu.

Like TD pointed out, always restart Inkscape after installing a new font in Windows. Install for all users is not necessary in 0.92.x.

  24. #24
    DesignsByDenise DesignsByDenise @DesignsByDenise

I did restart inkscape. That is why I feel there is no use to have that 7-zip. Unless I did something wrong? So Aero can you walk me through the proper steps of what I need to do, I downloaded the 7-zip software, what else am I suppose to do from there? maybe that is where I am messing up, Im not an idiot when it comes to computers but im not a genius either and I cant read minds as far as what all I am suppose to do. Can you help me out here before I uninstall please? Thanks

Assuming you installed 7-Zip with shell integration, you can do as follows.

    1. Right click the file inkscape-0.92.4_2020-02-28_8da6682-x86 (2).7z in your Downloads folder and select 7-Zip > Extract Here from the context menu.

    2. Open the new inkscape folder you just created in your Downloads folder and double click inkscape.exe to start Inkscape.

    3. Verify the version and date in the menu, Help - About Inkscape.

    4. If you prefer, you can now right click the Inkscape taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar before closing Inkscape.

    DesignsByDenise DesignsByDenise @DesignsByDenise

Im not sure what you mean by "shell integration" but I did everything else you said to do and basically I didnt see a new inkscape folder appear but I saw one that was next to the file you wanted me to "extract" that I didnt know if it was there before or not, I opened that folder, there was not a inkscape.exe there were only 2 inkscapes, 1 was a ms-dos application and the other was just an application, so i clicked on the application one and then went to the help-about inkscape and it was the exact same version I have always had. so what am i doing wrong😢😖

In Help - About Inkscape, does it say
    Inkscape 0.92.4 (8da6682, 2020-02-28)
    or
    Inkscape 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14)?

Try again, start the right one, Inkscape 0.92.4 (8da6682, 2020-02-28), because that is what you downloaded and unzipped :)

Also, always unhide file extensions in Windows.

I am having the same issue. After hours of trying to figure this our and reading many forums and hints. I found what works for me. I also didn't have the install for all users when I right clicked. What I had to do was right click the zip file and extract all. Once is did that the file would pop up and then I had the option to right click and install for all users. Hope this helps. Still need to restart inkscape but all my fonts are there now.

I have Inkscape 0.92. Unfortunately I still came across the same issue. "Install for all users" was not showing up. I tried many ways to find it. I realized I needed to right click on the zip file in my downloads folder and "Extract All". (I've never had to extract the files to install and use them.) After extracting and right clicking on the font files "Install for all users" suddenly appeared and everything is working smoothly again! Hope this helps someone!

@DesignsByDenise For all of the above, I think We exactly have the same case and I've found the solution. Just uninstall your recent inkscape, then check the dialog box that says delete all user preferences, and click next until the installation is finished. Then install again the latest inkscape version. Aftaer that you will see ALL the font that installed in your windows, also showing in inkscape.

If you can't install anyfont with double click or right click, go to font settings and install the font in it.

I'm trying to install 5 font types of the same font family on a Win10.
(regular, demi, light, demi condensed, light condensed)

    Installed fonts for all users.
When clicking on the font in the font folder I can see all five neatly listed.

Tried Inkscape 92.5, master and latest (1.0.1).

Always only showing regular and condensed.
    No idea why.

Is there any workaround to copy the fonts to the Inkscape folder or something like that?

  37. #37
    Tyler Durden Tyler Durden @TylerDurden

Could be the font names are not compatible with svg*. This happens occasionally.

    *

Since Inkscape uses SVG as its native file format, we need to take a quick look at how SVG describes font faces. SVG 1.1 (which for fonts is basically the same as CSS 2.1 ) defines the following font-selection properties:

    • font-family.
    • font-style: normal, italic, oblique.
    • font-variant: normal, small-caps.
    • font-weight: normal, bold, bolder, lighter, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900.
    • font-stretch: normal, wider, narrower, ultra-condensed, extra-condensed, condensed, semi-condensed, semi-expanded, expanded, extra-expanded, ultra-expanded.

(Regular seems to be regarded as synonymous with normal.)

    More here: http://tavmjong.free.fr/blog/?p=822

So "demi" might not be useful.

If the fonts are vital to the project, the names can sometimes be edited in FontForge and used in Inkscape.

I see all my fonts listed, but when I select the text icon and start typing, all I see are irregular, oversized objects such as rectangles. It was working fine in the morning and then this started happening later on that same day. Since then I have uninstalled and installed Inkscape but without success,

So I am having a similar problem and have found this thread helpful but my fonts still are not showing up in Inkscape (or GIMP for that matter), but do work fine in MS Paint. It is especially irritating because these are the only fonts I've ever paid for and the only ones I've ever had a problem with functioning. Specifically, I am using the National Forest font family, which has several subheadings/types/etc. (I'm not a typographer, I don't know what to call these things). Inkscape and GIMP only recognize the Regular and Bold options but when I open the "Font" menu in Inkscape it does show the Cursive style in the preview pane...just not in any document I create. So I can create this in Paint

but only get this in Inkscape

And to make matters confusing, here's what the text box says when I open it up to see if all the Faces/Types are available.

Completely separate from what it is showing on the page...but it clearly recognizes these as portions of the font itself!

I tried opening FontForge and resaving the files, as they are titled National Forest Thin/Regular/Bold/Extras but FontForge told me every glyph was invalid when I went to save/generate/export. I'm feeling pretty stuck and any help would be appreciated.

Confirmed. Inkscape messes up this font. I got just 3 of 4 (Outline/Regular/Thin/Heavy) styles and naming and display are not in sync. No idea how to "repair" because they work and worked for me in all other apps. (macOS/BigSur)

In case the font is named with non-english letters, this will also prevent install. to get around this, just rename the file. See the very end of this thread: https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/installed-fonts-do-not-appear/

In my case, the font was for Chinese simplified characters, and was naturally named something in Chinese characters. Once I renamed it something in english letters, it installed no problem.

    👍

I realize that it's been a while now since I installed a new font in Windows.
Since I often need some of them only the while of a specific project, I simply copy the fonts to the Inkscape user font folder.

To locate it : Preferences > System > User font (you should see the full path) > Open
On Windows, this folder is in "%APPDATA%\inkscape\fonts" (%APPDATA% is the environment variable for C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming).

When I put a font file in it then restart Inkscape, the font is available without Windows Installation.
