I bring this up because it has been driving me nuts for years.
If I mean to draw an item within a group, frequently Inkscape puts it outside the group. Then I try to put it in the group (selecting and dragging), and not infrequently (old hands) I fail and Inkscape puts it below the group. It will then not let me pick the blasted thing up and put it in a group!
I am not particular about how this problem gets solved. I want to draw it within the group, but I won't object to being able to stuff the item down the group's throat in some fashion. (Yeah, it's been driving me nuts for that long.)
Double-click any object in a group to enter that group.
Edit objects as needed.
Double-click on an empty area of the canvas to exit the group.
Objects in groups that are inside groups (nested, or sub-groups) may require multiple double-clicks to "drill down" to the target object, and subsequently, multiple double-clicks on the canvas will be needed to exit all nested groups (or select a different object outside all nested groups).

Any suggestions?
Thank you!

The Basic Tutorial in Inkscape's Help menu covers this with a little more detail.
Well, it's taking a bit for me to manage this (old hands again, is my guess), but thank you very much!
You've saved my sanity! (What sanity I have left, that is. . . .)
Right-click menu also has enter/exit any group selected.
