Beginners' Questions Distribute is driving me nuts...

Hi there, I'm new to Inkscape. I installed version 1.4 for Mac.

I'm following a silversmithing course and I regularly need to make designs that I can print on sticker and then stick to a ring or other small object.

Currently, I'm designing a ring with playing card symbols. I've drawn a rectangular of 70x12 mm and I've added four card symbols that I want to evenly distribute the four symbols relative to the rectangular. This should be easy, but the objects within the rectangular cluster two by two in the left and right side of the rectangular (see enclosed file).

I spent a couple of hour already trying to figure out what is going on. I tried many things. Also the 'third click' option, which doesn't seem to work.

Is there something wrong with my file?

I hope that someone is willing to help.

Many thanks, I highly appreciate your input!

    Regards, Luc (from the Netherlands)

I went through the same struggle a long time ago.

The position of a distributed shape is based on it's centre coordinates. When you distribute grouped shapes, the centre coordinates of the group are used. This is not explained in the extension's [help] tab. The solution is to align all the shapes to their centres in a single stack. Initially I thought this was crazy, but then I realised that this approach lets you adjust offsets in the finished design.

Thanks a lot Paddy. Good to hear that there is a solution! But I fear, I'm not able to follow your story... I would very much appreciate it if you would be willing to write-up the steps I have to undertake. I know that it will take some of your time, but it would really help me out. It would be great if you want to do that. Many thanks! Or do you know of a resource/video that explains this? Regards, Luc

This has been driving me insane for a long time as well. So - I decided to get to the bottom of this. Just create two circles centered on the vertical lines of the rectangle. select all 6 objects. Distribute horizontally with even horizontal gaps. Then center it to the rectangle.  Delete the two circles.

If you want it "very" precise, instead of using circles, just use lines.

I still don't understand why it doesn't work the way one could expect (?), but this is a perfect workaround I guess. Many thanks for your input!

Yeah - that concept needs to go back to drawing board. That is not how users are expecting it to work. The user should be able to select the rectangle (or any object/path) as the horizontal reference for the distribution.

Another one that drives me bonkers is grid alignment - lol

I hope to avoid that for a while :-)

COD's solution in #4 is best.

I misunderstood the question (again). I thought you wanted to use [Extensions > Generate from Path > Distribute Along Path...].
