Despite being what some might consider a power user, I've also relied on these buttons for years, and was disappointed to see them disappear from 1.1. Hopefully they'll return in a future version.
I work frequently using a Cintiq, so, having the toolbar buttons improve my workflow greatly. Burying them in a menu, or having me switch to a keyboard, slows me down greatly. I greatly miss those buttons.
The commands for zoom to page, zoom to artwork, etc are missing from version 1.1
I'm using 1.1 on Ubuntu 20.10, do the top row number keys 1-5 not still work ? they do for me.

There is an open issue about this on the Inkscape bug tracker: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/1910
These buttons are vital for beginners. I look forward to their return.

They will be back, as I understand it.
I hope that is the case. although this thread is 4 months old, which gives some trepidation.
